A Good Reflection

“I started marijuana at ten, drinking at fifteen. Soon I was on cocaine. I lost my wife, kids, and possessions—the loss was immense. It was hell,” explained Robert Herringa, who recently completed treatment at Project Rehab.  He continues, “There was no relief. I didn’t want anything to do with anything.”  Herringa says a friend told him about Project Rehab. “I was dealing with a lot; drinking, marijuana, and cocaine,” he reveals. “I was in the program three different times but just got ‘book knowledge’ the first two times before getting serious about my recovery during the third stint.  Now I like myself. This has been the first time I’ve been able to say this since age 10.” Herringa states this has now been the longest time he has been clean, 7 months and 5 days.  “I began to see the Resident Aides in the program as being happy.  They are doing what they are meant to do.  I didn’t used to feel that way. Now I do.”  He says he now has friends who don’t drink and don’t get high. “And my kids are now seeing me as the butterfly coming out of the caterpillar.  The biggest reward for me is in the morning as I brush my teeth in front of the mirror. I can say, ‘Yesterday, you did alright’.”

Rovert’s story appears in 40 Stories of Courage and Hope: Celebrating 40 Years of Project Rehab, which was published in Fall 2008 in recognition of Project Rehab’s 40th anniversary.  Click here to read more stories about our courageous clients and the treatment pioneers who helped make recovery possible
