Success Stories
Helping the Suffering
Joseph Colon was in and out of recovery programs in Cleveland until he decided he needed more than what they had to offer. In 1998 he committed himself to recovery and accepted the opportunity to get treatment at Project Rehab’s Hispanic Residential Program, HRP. HRP is the only residential treatment program of its type in Michigan. Joseph completed treatment in 1999 and continues working on recovery by staying involved with Project Rehab’s Alumni Association. The Alumni group welcomes anyone who completed treatment at any of the Project Rehab programs. (They meet each Monday night at 200 Eastern SE. For more information, visit www.projectrehab.org/alumni.php) He knows now that his use of drugs and alcohol caused his family a lot of pain. Today, years after his father passed away, tears still well up in Joseph’s eyes. “I wasn’t able to apologize to my father before he died. But I believe he knows I wasn’t a bad person and he forgives me.” He admits his recovery didn’t happen by itself. “People are still there to help me along the way,” he says. “My life before Project Rehab was hell.” Today as a Residential Care Counselor at Project Rehab, he gets joy in seeing others grow and considers it a gift to work with people who are sick and suffering. This is heaven for Joseph Colon.
Joseph’s story appears in 40 Stories of Courage and Hope: Celebrating 40 Years of Project Rehab, which was published in Fall 2008 in recognition of Project Rehab’s 40th anniversary.
