Teaching Others What She Learned
“When I woke up in the morning I thought, ‘how can I get high and who can I use to get high?’” explains Orraina Rolland, a mother of five. Her addiction lead her to neglect her children and eventually to involvement with the justice system and a judge who gave her the choice of going to rehab or prison. Orraina, known fondly as “Miss O”, selected rehab and was soon in Project Rehab’s FARP, Family Adult Recovery Program. This program promoted a family approach to recovery and Orraina’s children soon joined her. Orraina’s court order included drug treatment, anger management, and parenting skills. She says she “got it all in one shot.” She was in treatment from April of 1993 until May of 1995. While there, her children attended some of the meetings with her and assisted with meal duty. They were in recovery together, learning how to function as individuals and as a family, and how to do it clean and sober. Orraina, who now works for Project Rehab, is appreciative for the trust that she has earned through her recovery. “People trust me, my church trusts me, and my children trust me.” The biggest thing she wants to do these days as a Residential Care Counselor, is to give back what was given to Orraina Rolland, her life.
Orraina’s story appears in 40 Stories of Courage and Hope: Celebrating 40 Years of Project Rehab, which was published in Fall 2008 in recognition of Project Rehab’s 40th anniversary.
