Courageous in Her Move Forward

In her mid-teens, Gloria Jones-Herman was ‘freebasing’ and using crack cocaine. At age 22, after the birth of her first child, things started to slip like her productivity at work and her parenting skills.  Gloria was getting a reputation for herself and drawing the attention of the law. She also attracted users and sellers of a variety of goods and services to her home. A police raid at her home ended with her in jail for a week and her kids being removed from her custody. But she got out on a technicality and was ordered into a rehab facility for thirty days.  Then it was back to the same ol’ hustles.  It was while pregnant with her third child and in the process of requesting that her other two children be returned from child protective services, that she was referred to Project Rehab.  She entered the program but soon left, only to return again three weeks later, ready to surrender to the disease and begin her recovery.  During her stay she learned that she was teachable. She learned about healthy relationships with women and men.  Her biggest fear was that her children would not love her.  When it comes to the kids, she says, “I can still pat myself on the back, for a job continuously well done.” She encourages others who may be in the situation she was to “be courageous and move forward.”

Gloria’s story appears in 40 Stories of Courage and Hope: Celebrating 40 Years of Project Rehab, which was published in Fall 2008 in recognition of Project Rehab’s 40th anniversary.  Click here to read more stories about our courageous clients and the treatment pioneers who helped make recovery possible
