Success Stories
Passing On What She Learned
She was married very young and by the time Evon Jones was 23, she had three children and started to pick up a habit. Evon partied with a fast crowd while her mother and sister cared for the kids. Snorting heroin led to skin popping which turned into main lining which started her life on a downward spiral. She was in trouble with the law and her lawyer pointed out that drugs were her core problem. After running through all the excuses not to get into recovery, Evon’s mother took her to Project Rehab. She went cold turkey and during her three year stay she took the cotton out of her ears, put it in her mouth and listened, as she likes to say. Evon learned to have faith in the process and to respect herself as well as others. She learned how to make better choices. She also learned she was teachable and smart. After her graduation she reestablished her relationship with her family and worked in various capacities in many of the programs at Project Rehab. Her advice to anyone facing addiction and recovery is simple, “Put the amount of time and effort you spent on your addiction into your recovery and you can’t help but get better.”
Evon’s story appears in 40 Stories of Courage and Hope: Celebrating 40 Years of Project Rehab, which was published in Fall 2008 in recognition of Project Rehab’s 40th anniversary.
