About Project Rehab
History
In the late '60s, drug and alcohol abuse was not something treated by our culture as a behavioral health problem, as it is today. A stigma was attached to those who suffered from substance abuse. When local psychologist Dr. Bill Kooistra received a call from a minister who needed help for a heroin addict, little help was available. The community was in need of a service to "street addicts." Dr. Kooistra partnered with physician, Dr. Chet Maternowski to help prescribe medication and treat patients. This collaboration resulted in the formation of Project Rehab in March 1968, the first treatment facility of its kind in West Michigan. 40 years later, Project Rehab has provided thousands of clients with the opportunity to improve their lives.
